Why 6 Meals Per Day Works for Weight Loss
Monday, January 22, 2007, 12:26 PM
One of the most counter-intuitive concepts in the area of weight control, for many people to grasp, is why multiple small meals per day, works for weight loss. For many of us who are trying to lose the extra pounds, we are convinced that the only way to lose weight, is to starve ourselves. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Your body wants and requires good nutrition throughout the day to function optimally, and your body actually senses when it is not receiving adequate nutrition, and will slow its metabolism, to conserve energy, if we go more than a few hours without eating.

There is plenty of scientific and anecdotal evidence to support this. The key is to eat small, nutritionally sound meals approximately every 3 hours while we are awake. By doing so, this pattern helps maintain a more consistent level of blood glucose throughout the day.

When we go more than 3-4 hours without eating, blood glucose may drop, resulting in intense feelings of hunger, followed by overeating. This often leads to insulin spikes, which result in rapid storage of excess calories to the fat cells, and the ensuing repetative cycle of overeating and weight gain.

Frequent, small meals also help to maintain lean muscle mass. This is important because, muscle will be broken down by the body during periods of starvation, and converted to a fuel source in the absence of adequate nutrition. Muscle is your body's fat burning furnace. Toned, stimulated muscle helps keep your metabolism elevated, and encourages a shift in the direction of fat loss.

A multiple meal dietary approach, coupled with a program of daily exercise, which includes cardiovascular training and resistance, or weight training, is an optimal way to achieve and maintain a lean, toned body and healthy metabolism throughout one's life.

Eating in this manner is actually easier than many people believe, and can be incorporated in almost anybody's 'healthy' lifestyle. It is the best way, in my opinion, to feed one's body, and not one's fat.

Until next time, live well, eat well, and be well.

Another Year Down. Are you ready to get serious?
Tuesday, December 19, 2006, 11:21 AM
Do you ever get to the end of a particular day, only to think, "I meant to get such and such done," but soon realize that the day just got away from you. Generally when things like this happen, it's because we really don't plan to do something, and commit to that plan as a task which is mandatory to complete. We all know what this is like, and the sad truth is, the task may not even get done tomorrow or the next day.

If losing weight falls into this category for you, and it has been something that you've been meaning to do, but just have not been able to make it a priority, then maybe it's time to truly commit, and make weight-loss a mandatory task which demands completion over this next year.

Motivational giant, Anthony Robbins, says, "never leave the site where you have set a goal, without doing something in that moment towards the completion of that goal." So if you've decided to do something about your weight, and you've decided to commit to it, then pick up the phone and make the call. That phone call may be to check the hours or rates at a local gym, or maybe to get a physical exam by your doctor, or maybe to see a personal trainer or a nutrition specialist. If you want a medically guided approach to help you lose weight, then give our clinic a call, but, do something in a positive, proactive way, to reach your goal, this year.
Until next time, all the best to you and yours.
