A new Commander-in-Chief has been sworn into office today. It has been DOCUMENTED and preserved in digital, film, paint, drawing and a variety of other forms that I have left out or of which am simply unaware. The fact is, this is a historic moment that anyone at a future date can look back upon in a variety of forms and prove to themselves that it did indeed take place. I wish the very best for our new president and our country over the coming four years.
But there is another point to all of this, simply: If you are in the process of seriously trying to lose weight and become healthier, can you look back and say what you had for breakfast this morning. What about 3 days ago, or a month ago? It is a known fact that those who journal and document what they eat do better than those who don't, in the weight-loss arena. Better yet, do you document each day what you have eaten, as well as whether or not you exercised and what is was that you did?
As we go into this new year, I am going to encourage you all to commit to journaling your daily nutrition (each and every meal and anything that contains a calorie that passes your lips) as well as your daily exercise. In fact, I am going to challenge you to do this. I know that there are those of you out there who simply hate doing this. You think it's boring, tedious, a chore, etc.....but the fact remains that those who do it consistantly have a better chance at weight-loss success than those who don't. And, regardless of whether you are a current patient of mine or someone considering coming to our clinic, I want you to feel free to hold my feet to the fire and ask to see my journal. I am not perfect, but I try to do this on a daily basis, because.....it helps me eat better, cleaner, healthier and helps to remind me each day that, hey, you need to exercise!
So, in the spirit of a new, historic time of change, a positive change, let's make 2009 a year to remember. Document, Document,Document and record for history what you put in your mouth and what you did to break a sweat. Document that you are losing a pound or two each week, that you are becoming healthier, how you feel and how you did it. And by all means, expect the same from me!
All the best to all of you in 2009 and beyond.

First of all, we want to wish all of our patients a very happy and safe holiday season and applaud your efforts to maintain your healthy eating habits and exercise during this most challenging time of the year.
We will be closed beginning December 24th and through New Years Day. The first Monday after the New Year begins is the 5th of January and this will be our first day back at the clinic. If you have not had a follow-up appointment in a while and need to be seen, please call now for an appointment and we'll try our best to squeeze you in.
Also, whereas we have tried to maintain one Saturday of each month for appointments over the past couple of years, we will no longer be open on Saturdays. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We hope you understand.
Again, we wish you the best for the holidays and for the coming New Year. Our thoughts and hopes are with you for a healthy, fit start in 2009'
Sincerely,
Richard and Sherrill Kelley

Election day is over and regardless of which candidate got your vote, one thing I know both candidates were concerned about, was healing our healthcare system. Well....I believe the grassroots of healthcare, begins at home. Believe it or not, you have more control over the state and quality of your health than your physician or anyone else. How you choose to feed your body on a daily basis and whether or not you exercise on a regular basis, whether you smoke and/or drink, will all effect how much you impact and are impacted by the current healthcare system. If you smoke, you are automatically at a greater risk of upper respiratory infection as we approach flu season, not to mention the longterm pulmonary and potential cancer risks you may be incurring. If you eat poorly and neglect to employ the positive benefits which are derived from regular, daily exercise, you may be increasing your risk of developing hypertension, Type-2(adult-onset diabetes) and coronary disease, among a host of other potential weight-related disorders.
So today, I am going to encourage each and everyone who reads this blog, to look forward as we enter this new holiday season and as we usher in a fresh change of philosophy and direction of our country, to first focus on YOU and your own health.
You have two months before January 1, 2009 roles in. How you approach this time will dictate whether you are healthier as we begin the New Year, or whether you are fighting the same battle you've fought at this same time in the years past.
Take control of YOUR healthcare, by Caring for Your Health.
We wish you all the best for this coming holiday season and the coming New Year.
Sincerely, Dr. Kelley.

I believe that the most effective approach to nutrition and good health involves eating the best possible food that one can eat and dividing the caloric content of that food over multiple small meals each day.
In fact, I encourage just about all of my patients to eat in this manner. The key to making this work in the most simple and effective way possible is, I believe by optimal supplementation. Many of my patients ask if its OK to eat their own food. This can be tough to answer on one hand, as it is often 'their own food' which has been responsible, at least in part, for their weight-gain.
What we really try to focus on, here at Physician's Way, is teaching which of 'your own food' is helping feed your muscle or which is actually feeding your bodyfat.
If our patients can learn which types of 'store-bought' foods are geared toward supporting lean healthy muscle and encouraging those types of 'clean' foods, we can help simplify their daily nutrition by encouraging 'known' protein rich supplements (shakes, protein bars and protein based healthy snacks) to round out the daily menu. Supplementation is a Key strategy for long-term success in managing one's weight and supporting optimal fitness, whether you are a fitness athlete or simply someone wishing to remain lean and healthy throughout your life. Again, Your Body Will Be a Visual Reflection of the FUELS that you feed it.
Feed your body like your life depends on it, because....it does.
As always, live well, eat well and be well!
