The Lowdown on HCG use for Weight-Loss
Wednesday, June 9, 2010, 12:49 PM
We've all heard or seen the ads. 'Lose 40-lbs in 30 days without hunger!' Or, maybe you have a friend who has lost a lot of weight by getting 'those shots.'

Well, we get calls daily, asking if we use HCG in our program for weight-loss. Our answer to that question is NO. However, I felt it was time to address this in our newsletter, on our blog and on Facebook, since it is of such interest to so many people these days.

If you don't know what HCG is, and many folks don't, it is 'Human Chorionic Gonadotropin,' a hormone which is secreted by the placenta during Pregnancy. HCG is also secreted by gestational trophoblastic tumors and is consequently used as a valuable marker when following patients with these tumors.

HCG use in weight management was first documented in 1954 by Dr. A. Simeons, in conjunction with a rigid diet which consisted of approximately 500 calories per day along with near daily injections of HCG for 8 weeks.

This approach fell from favor after a series of clinical trials disputed the effectiveness of the Simeons Method. In 1995, a meta-analysis review of prior studies concluded that there is no scientific evidence that HCG is effective in the treatment of obesity. The authors stated..."the use of HCG should be regarded as an inappropriate therapy for weight reduction.."

Now, as a practicing physician, my main focus is the overall health of my patients, first and foremost. Short term, non-sustainable weight-loss which ignores the development of lifelong patterns of healthy behavior, is not what we are about here at Physician's Way.

I personally believe that the use of HCG (the pregancy hormone) in conjunction with starvation dieting has the potential to be flat out dangerous, especially in a less than adequate clinical setting.

That aside, I am a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP), and it is their position that 'The Use of HCG for Weight loss is not recommended.' You can read more about the position of the ASBP on this issue, by going to ASBP.org and going to 'Position Statements' at the bottom of their home page.

Love Yourself!
Tuesday, May 25, 2010, 03:01 PM
Our main goal and mission at Physician's Way, is to help you reach and sustain the healthiest weight possible for your particular age, height and individual medical issues. We do not focus on reaching unsustainable or unrealistic weight goals that are unreasonable in nature. We truly believe that everyone has an ideal weight 'range' that is compatable with excellent overall health and that it is important to strive for that place.

Having said this, it is disheartening to hear when someone is angsting over 'those last few pounds' that just don't seem to ever go away. In truth, most of us will struggle our entire life, with 'those last few pounds' that just seem impossible to eliminate. The fact is, our bodies are designed and behave in a manner which tries to 'protect us' from wasting away.

Because of this, it is important for us to approach weight-loss with a healthy mindset. YOU are not your weight. It's important to know that excess weight does not define 'Who You Are' and it is not a character flaw. We hope that you are loving and accepting of yourself first and foremost and that your efforts to lose weight, not only improve the way that you see yourself, but ultimately improve your health.

If you happen to be struggling with the idea that you just have to be at a particular weight or fit into a particular outfit to be happy with yourself and this is causing you excessive grief, stress and heartache, it may help to talk to someone who can offer therapeutic guidance and counseling. Not all weight-loss is healthy. Please keep this in mind and seek help if you feel you need it.
All the best,
Dr. Kelley

Summer is just around the corner!
Tuesday, April 20, 2010, 12:42 PM
It's almost here.....that time of year which terrifies and frustrates many of us year after year with the same old dilema as years past. It's swimsuit season and though there are arguably more pressing health reasons to lose weight and get fit, for many of us, it is undeniable that not being at the physical place you want and have planned to be, year after year, is mentally tormenting.

Again, as in my last post, trying to remain consistent with your exercise efforts and focussing on feeding yourself in a manner which 'supports your fitness efforts,' is key to longterm success both in losing weight and in maintaining your weight-loss.

So.....this is just a reminder. We're 6 weeks away from the beginning of June, when the kids are out of school and they will be wanting to go to the local pool. Please plan to do the things now that will ensure you are comfortable joining them.

It's time now, to get started.
We are here if you need more help and guidance.

Take care, as always.
