As the controversy continues to linger among the representatives of our government regarding healthcare reform, one message has become More glaringly clear to me than ever. You cannot afford 'not' to take care of yourself. Yes, there will always be those medical issues which we never asked for, nor had any control over (an accidental fall with a broken bone; the development of a cancer despite the fact that you never smoked, trauma due to a motor vehicle accident, etc....). Despite these potential, unforeseen hazards and tragedies that can possibly affect any of us, there are many things that you and I can DO to avoid many of the medical pitfalls which may not be as written in stone as we may believe. If you don't smoke, don't start...If you do smoke, do your best to quit...(we know smoking leads to lung disease, accelerates coronary disease and can and does cause CANCER. If you eat poorly, clean up your diet. Eat more vegetables, less fat, less 'fast food' and less of the food that you KNOW is bad for you. If you don't exercise regularly, then start. You may have to start by walking on a daily basis. See your doctor if you have any question about your ability to start an exercise program safely, but guess what, your doctor most likley wants you to exercise, eat well and take care of yourself. If you are unhealthy because you are overweight or obese, your doctor almost assuredly wants you to lose weight. You have more control over your health and ability to stay healthy than you think. Our current system is heavily geared toward 'Ill-Care' and that is what we are all paying for. Taking care of ourselves is the most 'affordable' means of keeping healthcare costs down. Do yourself a favor and take responsibility for Your Own Health Care, and Care for Your Health.
All the Best.

Have you gotten in your exercise today? If not, please hold yourself accountable (to yourself) and make sure you do what you planned to do today. If it helps, give yourself a 'gold star,' so-to-speak. Do you remember being in kindergarten and getting a star for learning your letters or your numbers? Well, even as an adult, sometimes it helps to give yourself a 'gold star.' For myself, if I do the exercise that I have planned for a given day, I simply get to place a checkmark in the box next to what I did (ex. biceps/triceps....check!), and then I highlight the box with a yellow highlighter, in my exercise/nutrition journal. What can I say, I'm easily entertained. For you, it may be that your 'gold star' is that you get to watch a certain TV program if you accomplish your exercise goal for the day, or you get to surf the internet. Whatever that reinforcement may be for you, I encourage you to use something of this nature to hold yourself accountable, so that each day you follow through with your plan to exercise, you also reinforce that action by giving yourself your own, personal 'gold star.' For myself, I simply want to see week after week of checked boxes, colored brightly with a yellow highligher when I look through my journal. I know my waistline will reflect how consistently that continous chain of yellow boxes occurs, and my overall fitness and health will reflect this, as well.
Have a great day, and take care of yourself.

I can't believe that several months have already passed since my last blog. We have been very busy here at Physician's Way, seeing many new faces and trying to guide these new patients down the path toward a healthier, leaner, fitter life. The sunny weather is a welcome to many, in that there is more motivation to get outside and walk, jog or become more active in a city which boasts fitness as part of it's pride and passion. With each new patient that I see, we review past medical history, approach to nutrition and exercise, and as I talked about in my last writing, we discuss and encourage journaling, to keep track of one's dietary choices and their daily exercise.
As these patients leave our office, I inevitably tell them "good luck." However, more and more, I follow that phrase with, "but luck has nothing to do with it."
The truth is, as successful as many of our patients have been, luck has little to do with it. One by one, as our patients lose weight, gain more lean muscle, and begin to feel better, I realize that it is generally because they have taken 'Luck' out of the equation. They are eating more consciously, exercising more faithfully and documenting/journaling what they are doing, each step of the way.
In short, losing weight, becoming fit and learning to eat in a healthy manner is no accident. We applaud the efforts of all of our patients and wish you all continued health and wellbeing throughout the coming year. And, we will continue to wish you all good luck. But..................
All the best.
