Holiday Season is Here.......Time to Have a Plan!

Election day is over and regardless of which candidate got your vote, one thing I know both candidates were concerned about, was healing our healthcare system. Well....I believe the grassroots of healthcare, begins at home. Believe it or not, you have more control over the state and quality of your health than your physician or anyone else. How you choose to feed your body on a daily basis and whether or not you exercise on a regular basis, whether you smoke and/or drink, will all effect how much you impact and are impacted by the current healthcare system. If you smoke, you are automatically at a greater risk of upper respiratory infection as we approach flu season, not to mention the longterm pulmonary and potential cancer risks you may be incurring. If you eat poorly and neglect to employ the positive benefits which are derived from regular, daily exercise, you may be increasing your risk of developing hypertension, Type-2(adult-onset diabetes) and coronary disease, among a host of other potential weight-related disorders.
So today, I am going to encourage each and everyone who reads this blog, to look forward as we enter this new holiday season and as we usher in a fresh change of philosophy and direction of our country, to first focus on YOU and your own health.
You have two months before January 1, 2009 roles in. How you approach this time will dictate whether you are healthier as we begin the New Year, or whether you are fighting the same battle you've fought at this same time in the years past.
Take control of YOUR healthcare, by Caring for Your Health.
We wish you all the best for this coming holiday season and the coming New Year.
Sincerely, Dr. Kelley.

Supplementation. Your Body Will Be a Reflection Of the Fuels You Feed It!

I believe that the most effective approach to nutrition and good health involves eating the best possible food that one can eat and dividing the caloric content of that food over multiple small meals each day.
In fact, I encourage just about all of my patients to eat in this manner. The key to making this work in the most simple and effective way possible is, I believe by optimal supplementation. Many of my patients ask if its OK to eat their own food. This can be tough to answer on one hand, as it is often 'their own food' which has been responsible, at least in part, for their weight-gain.
What we really try to focus on, here at Physician's Way, is teaching which of 'your own food' is helping feed your muscle or which is actually feeding your bodyfat.
If our patients can learn which types of 'store-bought' foods are geared toward supporting lean healthy muscle and encouraging those types of 'clean' foods, we can help simplify their daily nutrition by encouraging 'known' protein rich supplements (shakes, protein bars and protein based healthy snacks) to round out the daily menu. Supplementation is a Key strategy for long-term success in managing one's weight and supporting optimal fitness, whether you are a fitness athlete or simply someone wishing to remain lean and healthy throughout your life. Again, Your Body Will Be a Visual Reflection of the FUELS that you feed it.
Feed your body like your life depends on it, because....it does.
As always, live well, eat well and be well!
Dr. Kelley

Accidental Food Merger is Big Hit!

We recently got in our first order of 'Taco Cheese' protein bites, by 'Health Wise'. These are are chrunchy little taco-flavored morsels which make for a great low calorie snack, packing 12 grams of protein and only 11 grams of carbohydrate into each bag, containing only 120 calories.
What we didn't know, until quite by accident, was that these crunchy little packets of flavor acually go great with the 'Health Wise' Turkey Chili, to create a very nutritionally sound kind-of 'Frito Pie,' so to speak, but with a total of 340 calories and a whopping 34grams of protein, and it tastes great!
A really nice alternative for those of you looking for something to meet your Tex-Mex Fix in a fairly low calorie, healthy sort of way.
Until next time!

The Key Hormone Necessary for Fat Storage?

People who are wanting to lose weight, I find are often secretly hoping, and often verbally offering that, "it's probably my thyroid that is responsible for making me gain weight." While there are those for whom this is actually the case, at least in my own practice, for the vast majority of my patients, this is not the case. There is, however, a hormone which plays a major role in fat storage in all of us, and for way too many of us, it becomes elevated and sometimes may stay elevated for longer periods than is healthy. What hormone am I talking about? INSULIN. Fat cannot enter the fat cells unless insulin is present to allow glucose and fatty acids to enter the adipose cells(fat cells), for storage as bodyfat. Consequently, a diet which is high in high glycemic carbohydrate(white rice, pasta, bread, potato chips, candy, soft drinks, commercial fruit juices, sugar-laden desserts) raises the body's insulin levels, making it tremendously easy for the body to store both the carbohydrate and dietary fat taken in during a meal, as FAT. So, for many of our patients, I recommend getting the majority of their carbohydrates in the form of a variety of green, yellow, orange (colorful) fibrous vegetables and keeping high glycemic carbohydrates to a minimum. This has the potential to keep blood insulin levels more stable and allows the body to access its fat stores to burn as fuel......and that's what we all want, isn't it?
Have a great day?
Dr. Kelley

I'm doing cardio everyday, but just can't seem to progress.....

So many patients I meet for the first time tell me that they are doing cardiovascular workouts (treadmill, eliptical trainer, running, jogging....etc.) everyday, but they just can't seem to lose weight. When I inquire about whether they are incorporating resistance or weight training, I often hear, "well, you know, a little." This usually translates into 'none.'
The neglect of stimulating and challenging one's overall lean muscle mass on a regular, weekly basis, and instead substiting cardio exercise in it's place is often a sure sign that weight loss may be an uphill battle. Cardiovascular exercise is a healthy and necessary component of any good weight loss program. Unfortunately, although it burns a certain amount of calories during and shortly after engaging in this activity, it has a limited ability to elevate the metabolic rate for a long period of time, as does weight training.
Challenged, well fed muscle burns fat! Please keep this in mind, especially if you're engaging in a fitness routine without the incorporation of strength training, or you're exercising, but can't seem to progress with your weight loss.
All the Best.
Richard D.
I bought it from Jack and Joe!

I don't know how many of you may be familiar with Jack Lalanne and Joe Weider, but historically, these two gentlemen have impacted the world of fitness in an enormous way and continue to do so. I grew up watching Jack Lalanne preach the fitness lifestyle on television in the early 60's, as well as watching him perform feats of strength and endurance, such as swimming handcuffed, from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's warf, towing a 1000 pound boat. Joe Weider is responsible for the development of modern day bodybuilding as we know it and in many ways responsible for the success of Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as many other's in the bodybuilding arena, along with teaching the benefits of health and fitness through weight training (weight lifting) to the masses.
These two men, both still living,(what a coincidence?) profoundly influenced my view of how becoming fit, and focusing on fitness and good nutrition, can translate into overall good health.
Jack Lalanne and Joe Weider have influenced untold numbers of people throughout the years with their contributions to the world of fitness. They have certainly influenced and sold me on this way of life. It is my goal to pass along their knowledge and passion for living a fitness oriented life to my patients and friends alike, as well as attempting to live this lifestyle myself.
Until next time, Live Well, Live Fit!
Dr. Kelley

We Help People Lose Weight and Get Healthy!

Eight words. People always ask me what we do at Physician's Way, and it really comes down to 8 words. "We help people lose weight and get healthy." That is really the major goal at our clinic. We accomplish this by 1) Helping patients reign in their daily intake of calories in a way that satisfies their hunger, as well as their nutritional needs. 2) We strongly encourage the development of ones fitness, while simultaneously helping patients learn how to feed their bodies in a way that supports optimal fitness. 3) We give unconditional moral support and provide accountability with weekly weigh-ins. 4) We assist this process with medications which help with appetite control, in those individuals who need help with this aspect, and in whom there are no contraindications to do so.
That's what we do. "We Help People Lose Weight and Get Healthy."
All the best for this coming New Year. We hope you live it in the best of health, happiness and prosperity.
Richard Kelley, M.D.

Have a Plan for the Holidays!

If your don't already know how your going to approach the holiday season, it is not too late to get your plan in place....better late than never!
For starters, plan to get your journal out and pay close attention to your food choices by writing everything down that passes your lips. Also, think hard about how you know that you'll feel if you over-indulge at any time over the next 6 weeks. Think about where you want to be, how you want to feel, and how much you want to weigh on January 1st 2008.
It is possible to buck the trends that so many people expect, and actually continue to lose weight over the holidays.
Focus on higher protein (eat the turkey), low carb (limit the pies, cakes, candies, mashed potatoes and stuffing), low fat ( limit the giblet gravy, butter, and sauces). Also, limit your alcohol intake, if you drink.
Make it a point to exercise at least a little everyday over the holidays.
Give yourself a big holiday gift this year....A healthier you at the beginning of the pending New Year!
Happy Holidays from Physicians Way to all of our patients. We wish you the very best for your health and happiness for the coming year.
Dr. Kelley
